Art & Design

Within Art & Design, all children at St Mary’s School draw, paint and create three-dimensional work using a variety of media and stimuli.

A carefully planned Art and Design curriculum encourages children to develop their artistic skills and allows their talents to shine. We introduce pupils to a variety of creative activities. These include drawing, painting, printing, modelling and needlecraft and they learn to use materials with precision and expertise.

The children combine traditional art-making methods with the latest technology. For example, the Year 6 children recently designed African block printing on paper. They transferred their block prints to a computer programme and printed the designs using our 3D printer in the STEAM Centre. After printing, the girls applied their designs to decorate traditional teak. The teak designs were integrated as a central part of the set for the Year 6 summer play.

Pupils participate in art exhibitions and are able to discuss their work and the work of others using appropriate vocabulary. We are also proud to share the children’s beautiful artwork on our Blue Stairs Gallery. These wonderful Art and Design displays are updated regularly for everyone to enjoy.
