St Mary's SchoolCommunity

A community of inclusive support and involvement

When your child is welcomed into our school community, we extend that welcome to you also. The St Mary’s School Community is one where partnership is central; partnership between the school, home, parish and local community. We are a Catholic community and we have the exciting task of joining you, the parents, in the development of your child.

We aim to teach the children at St Mary’s respect for religious and moral values as well as acceptance of other people, creeds and cultures. We aim to encourage the children to develop and exercise self-discipline as they grow towards full Christian maturity.

We want them to be aware of the world in which they live and to realise that they have obligations to society as well as rights within it.

Parental involvement

A large number of parents are involved in supporting the school in a variety of ways. These range form listening to children read, reading to children, helping around the classrooms, accompanying classes on school outings, helping to run the Christmas Bazaar and other fund raising and social activities, making costumes and scenery for school productions as well as running sports and other after school clubs. The list is endless! Being involved in the life of the school is a very fulfilling experience.

St Mary’s has recently established a PTA. Parents automatically become a member of the PTA on their child’s admittance to school. A small group of parents and teachers make up the PTA committee. Membership of the PTA committee is reviewed regularly.

If you would like to offer your support to the school, please speak to the Headmistress who will be very happy to discuss this with you.

Local Community Involvement

Throughout the year we support a number of charities. We support these through fund-raising activities and also sponsorship. Some of the charities we support are:

  • Cafod
  • The Macmillan Trust
  • Catholic Children’s Society
  • The Samaritans Purse – providing presents for children in countries at war

We also visit local venues for the elderly to spend time with them and sing with them. Our annual Harvest festival provides some delicious tempting food and every year we take part in the carol concert at the Royal Albert Hall in aid of the chosen charity.

Keeping parents and teachers in touch

After children have started at St Mary’s there are many opportunities for teachers and parents to get together to discuss children’s progress and learning.

These are:

  • Formal parent consultation meetings twice a year
  • Written reports issued to parents twice a year
  • Morning discussions when children are dropped off between 8.00am and 8.50am. ( Please remember however that this is also preparation time for teachers.) Staff are very willing to talk with parents but should not be expected to do so during teaching time.

Parents are encouraged to read and/or attend the following:

  • The fortnightly school newsletter
  • The planning displayed outside all classrooms
  • The notice boards in the bootroom entrance
  • Class assemblies and “Praying Togethers”
If you are concerned in any way about any aspect of your child’s schooling, please do not hesitate to bring your concern to the attention of either the class teacher or the Headmistress, who will listen and act upon your comments.
